Sri Lanka (2004)

Artist residencies provide time; space and a safe place to think freely and try out new things without fear of failure. Away from normal domestic restraints it is an opportunity for an individual to shift and develop their practice much more intensely. The real results of this experience are not immediately apparent and will come to full fruition over a number of years. This residency took place in two locations, which could have led to quite a fractured experience; in fact each space complimented the other. Lunuganga, an isolated rural idyll was where I spent my time thinking, looking and collecting material, whereas VAFA, placing me in a fast and frenzied cosmopolitan metropolis, became the space of production.
