Kuona Trust

In 2009, I spent the beginning of the summer as an Artist in Residence at Kuona Trust in Nairobi. I arrived with few expectations, no charger for my camera, and limited access to film processing facilities. It was a great opportunity—a blank sheet upon which to rewrite my practice.

I decided to return to drawing. Rather than focusing on technical perfection, I looked to what had been my greatest love since childhood: storytelling through pictures. For six weeks, I documented each day through an illustration of my experiences, plus photographs taken with my mobile phone. Together, these formed a visual diary highlighting my many misunderstandings and adventures. The work is organized into three parts: Journey to Kuona, Walk to Matatu, and Six Weeks
