The city of Jeddah is home to one of the world’s largest open-air art museums. It feels like there are hundreds of modernist sculptures adorning the entire city – created by some of the biggest names of 20th century art history. The majority of the students I taught knew about the roundabouts and but were unaware of the origin of the structures on the Malecon.
Toward the end of my contract I spent much of my free time in the city documenting these fascinating sculptures. They were, for me, the definition of Jeddah and helped me find some form of orientation in a city where the majority of my experience of the place was looking out the window of a vehicle or a building.
