I’m delighted to have my work featured in this landmark exhibition opening on Thursday, November 21 at Tate Britain. I will be showing my early colour work of constructed images as well as Autoportrait in it’s original size.
The show revisits the turbulent Thatcher era through the lens of photography, set against a backdrop of pivotal social and political movements: race uprisings, the miners’ strikes, Section 28, the AIDS pandemic, and the rise of gentrification. Photography became a critical tool for activism, documenting protest and amplifying underrepresented voices.
Key themes include the Black Arts Movement, queer experiences, the South Asian diaspora, and women’s representation in photography, with groundbreaking work from collectives like Autograph ABP and Hackney Flashers.
The exhibition will be on view till May 5th 2025 and it will be accompanied by the talk on Photography and Political Blackness including Roshini Kempadoo, Marc Boothe, Al-An deSouza and myself.
As 2024 draws to a close the world still feels like a very dark place but as this glimpse into Britain of the 1980s attests, things do and will eventually improve. However, we have to come together to make that change.
