In 1999 I was invited to speak about my work at Redeye in Manchester. The city has a special place in my heart as it is where I did my undergraduate degree and stayed during my first job at staffs Polytechnic in Stoke-on-Trent. It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since, but it has!
Paul Herriman the Director of Redeye invited me to select someone from a different generation to join me for an in conversation to reflect on our photographic careers, in parallel to Redeye’s lifespan. I invited Ronan Mackenzie the renowned fashion photographer and curator. Last year she invited me to participate in an exhibition and series of events entitled ‘I’m Home’ in Hackney.
During our conversation about the intergenerational differences and similarities of our experiences, Ronan and I reflected on our distinct paths into photography. We discussed how the industry has changed, particularly in respect to people who identify as POC.
