Autoportrait 2006 at Photo Miami
(2006-12-05)
Charles Guice will be exhibiting the work of Joy Gregory at Photo Miami which runs concurrently with Art Basel in Miami, USA (7th - 10th December). A new boxed edition of Autoportrait will be available, consisting of 9 Giclee prints on Cotton Rag paper.
This collection is a key part of British Art History in the 1980’s and 1990’s with particular reference to issues around diversity and inclusion. It was the first commission by Autograph as an organisation and was shown at Camerawork in 1990, curated by Sunil Gupta and Monika Baker.
The original prints were made on Ilford Galerie Matt (Double Weight) Fibre Paper processed in a very weak solution of Lith Developer. The development of the images took up 30 minutes in total darkness to avoid fogging. This process is what gives the prints clear whites, velvety matt blacks and a pink/brown colour in the mid/skin tones. The production of Ilford Galerie paper was discontinued in 1989.
Only a one complete sets of this work was made and is in the collection of the Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane, Australia. This purchase came was a result of the exhibition 'Who Do You Take Me For?' curated by Clare Williamson which included artists such as Sutapa Biswas, Sunil Gupta, Mona Hatoum and Roshini Kempadoo
In the summer of 2006 a smaller sized reprint was made using the original method and materials which, had been stored away for 16 years. The result of many printing sessions is here in this box edition. These original silver prints were scanned and produced as Giclee prints by Metro Imaging in London. There are only 20 sets available.
